Shoulder Pain
What to do, What to avoid and How Physical Therapy Can Help you:
Shoulder pain can be a frustrating and debilitating condition that affects your daily activities and quality of life.
Whether you’ve experienced an injury, overused your shoulder, or suffer from a chronic condition, finding relief is crucial.
common shoulder conditions :
Also known as adhesive capsulitis, frozen shoulder is usually caused by inflammation. The capsule of the shoulder joint has ligaments that hold the shoulder bones to each other. When the capsule becomes inflamed, the shoulder bones are unable to move freely in the joint. This pain usually prevents you from moving your arm, and the related lack of movement can lead to stiffness and even a loss of mobility or “freezing of the shoulder”
The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons in your shoulder. They help you lift and move your arms away from your body. The rotator cuff keeps the ball off the upper arm bone (humerus) in the shoulder blade socket.
A partial or complete rotator cuff tear makes it difficult to raise and move your arm. You may have shoulder pain and arm weakness. Rotator cuff injuries are common, especially as you get older.
It occurs when there is impingement of tendons or bursa in the shoulder from bones of the shoulder. Overhead activity of the shoulder, especially repeated activity, is a risk factor for shoulder impingement syndrome. Examples include: painting, lifting, swimming, tennis, and other overhead sports. Other risk factors include bone and joint abnormalities.
Tendinitis occurs when the shoulder joint is excessively overused typically due to repetitive overhead activity or sport like basketball, volleyball etc. Poor posture is also a major factor, as this alters the normal forces on the tendons, and can set you up for tendon injury. Your tendons undergo inflammation, resulting in swelling and painful impingement when raising your arm from rest.
What to Do :
- Rest and Ice: If you experience shoulder pain, it’s essential to rest and allow your shoulder to recover. Apply ice packs for 15-20 minutes several times a day to reduce inflammation and pain.
- Gentle Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Consult with a healthcare professional or physical therapist to develop a tailored exercise program like we do here at ReActive Sports Clinic. Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises can help improve flexibility, reduce stiffness, and strengthen the muscles supporting your shoulder joint
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Mefenamic Acid, Ibuprofen etc., can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation, temporarily .
- Consult with an expert : for a complete diagnosis, evaluation & treatment, seek out experts in the field of orthopedic sports medicine and sports physiotherapists who can provide you with the best treatment plan, like we have in our clinic.
- Overexertion and Overuse: Avoid repetitive activities that strain your shoulder, such as lifting heavy objects or performing excessive overhead movements. Take regular breaks during repetitive tasks to minimize strain.
- Poor Posture: Slouching or maintaining incorrect posture can strain your shoulder and exacerbate pain. Be mindful of your posture and practice proper ergonomics at work or during daily activities. Be mindful also of your sleeping positions.
- Sudden Impact or Trauma: Avoid activities or situations that can lead to sudden impact or trauma to your shoulder, such as contact sports or falls.
How Physical therapy and technology can help you :
Aside from traditional physiotherapy, here at ReActive Sports Clinic, we use the most cutting-edge modalities to treat your condition to get the best outcome. A combination of radiofrequency treatment, laser therapy, and manual therapy can help you with your condition.
Once we have established the cause of your shoulder pain, we create a specialized combination of physical therapy methods to manage and relieve your pain.
Gentle manual therapy helps to restore normal joint movement, ease soft tissue restrictions, and promote circulation, while specific therapeutic exercises restore strength, and the correct sequence of muscle activation around the shoulder joint.
Finally, we teach you techniques to enhance your strength and to prevent the recurrence in future
So don’t suffer in silence – take action today and start living a pain-free life!
